The Department’s broad-based program provides students with training in both the social and physical science of geography, as well as in techniques such as GIS and remote sensing that is critical to answering geographic questions. A core research area is housing.

Our housing research focuses on a range of supply- and demand-side issues including: structure and organization of the housebuilding industry, green building, development feasibility, microstructure of demand, immigration and housing, housing and economic development. Two important themes intersecting with our housing research are (1) urban studies including the historical and current study of urban form and social structure and (2) geographic information systems, a set of tools and techniques for mapping and analyzing spatial data. Specific projects include: international comparative research on the structure and organization of housing supply; green building; urban morphometrics; housing and economic development in Ontario geographies of personal networks; urban demographics and housing choices; uncertainty and household mobility; and the Ima(in)ing London historical GIS project.
