City of Edmonton Archives

Located in the historic Prince of Wales Armouries Heritage Centre, the City of Edmonton Archives is a public research facility housing civic government and private records documenting Edmonton's history. Established in 1971, the Archives is administered by the Community Services Department.

It houses archival materials including paper records, oral history tapes, photographs, film, video recordings, computer records, correspondence, diaries and personal histories. Everyone is welcome to visit the City Archives Reference Room and access the collection of materials on the history of Edmonton free of charge. The entrance is located on the south side of the Armouries, and the Archives is located inside the building on the second floor. The facility is wheelchair accessible.

The City of Edmonton Archives website provides access to an extensive online photograph database, descriptions of private and civic record groups, and details on current displays, online exhibits, special events, and programs. The online database of Archives Records can be searched by: name, topic, repository, provenance, title and record no. Simple and advanced searches are possible. The photograph collection can be searched online by subject.

The Still and Moving Images collection includes negatives, slides, moving images, and photographic prints. We have over 250,000 historical photographs dating back to the 1880s. Of these, approximately 3,000 were inherited from the Northern Alberta Pioneers and Old Timers Association. Our slide collection numbers over 100,000 images, including many contemporary images of Edmonton.

Over 500 current and historical maps of the Edmonton area dating from 1882 provide a unique geographic guide to Edmonton’s development. The collection also features more than 19,000 plans and architectural drawings of significant buildings and homes from the City Architect’s Department and other sources. An extensive collection of aerial photographs of Edmonton (1924-1995) is available for environmental assessments, historical site surveys, and private residential research.
