The City Institute at York University (CITY)

Established in 2006, the City Institute at York University (CITY) engages in leading-edge research and critical analyses of the city, in all of its parts and manifestations. In addition to contributing to the knowledge base of academics, policymakers and civil society, the Institute seeks to open new intellectual and political spaces in which counter-discourses may be created to challenge received wisdom as the city of the 21st century takes shape. In addition, CITY encourages and facilitates participation in public policy and community activism as an essential form of knowledge mobilization. Our researchers have long-standing relationships with community groups, NGOs, Aboriginal nations, and policymakers both in Canada and internationally.

CITY also plays a vital role in developing Canada’s next generation of leaders and thinkers, with graduate students playing a central role in the life of the Institute and participating fully in its research activities.
