School of Planning

The School of Planning is one of two constituent schools in the Faculty of Architecture and Planning. The main aim of the school is an understanding of urban and environmental systems, and the relationships between them. The faculty are committed to planning, designing, and managing meaningful communities within a context of healthy and life-sustaining environments. The School of Planning seeks to provide rigorous education in community design, and to advance the academic discipline and professional practice of planning through teaching, research, and professional and community service.
Within the Faculty is a research institute, the Cities and Environment Unit. CEU provides a service function, helping the Faculty serve the needs of the community for affordable help with planning and design projects. 

Several projects are currently underway in the School of Planning, such as:
•    First Nations community planning;
•    Oceans and governance in Southeast Asia;
•    Social dynamics of economic performance: Innovation and creativity in city-regions;
•    Theory and practice in planning the suburbs;
•    Environmental diagnostics: built environment and health;
•    Urban ecology: food in the city;
•    Cultural uses of urban wetlands;
•    Smart growth and land policy;
•    Documenting landscape architecture in Atlantic Canada

Under the Theses Section are found lists of theses which have been completed since 1998.  The listing is arranged by year.  Under each year, the theses are listed alphabetically by last name.  Some have links to an abstract.

Under the Projects Section are links to the full text PDFs to various student projects.  Students have the opportunity to involve themselves in planning or design projects and work directly with a community on a variety of planning related issues.

The Conference Modules section describes some of the fora held by the Dalhousie University School of Planning.  Each year, the School together with many friends holds a public forum on some issue of importance and immediate relevance to the community.

The Cities and Environment section provides information on the Cities and Environment Unit which has been in operation since September 1993. Its aim is to assist urban and rural communities develop strategies and designs that address local challenges and opportunities. This is achieved through practical research that is specific to the local context, but informed by a global view.  Work conducted by the Unit is project-based and focused on community development. Projects include physical, social, and economic strategies to improve the community and build its capacity to develop and act on local solutions.  A link to the documents and materials issued by the unit provides information on what items are still available along with their cost. 

There is also a link to TUNS Press publications.  TUNS Press, the publishing arm of the Faculty of Architecture and Planning, Dalhousie University, produces a range of documents on Canadian architecture and planning.  The site describes the main available titles listed in order of most recent publication. A brief description and pricing information is listed. 

The Sexton Library of the former Technical University of Nova Scotia, now incorporated into Dalhousie University, is a Canadian Legal Depository for government documents.  All CMHC publications can be accessed through the Novanet catalogue of Atlantic Canada universities.
