Atlantic Seniors Housing Research Alliance
Atlantic Seniors Housing Research Alliance
Atlantic Seniors Housing Research Alliance (ASHRA) represents all of the groups involved in the research project; projecting the Housing Needs of Aging Atlantic Canadians. This research project is based at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Between 2005 and 2009, the research will look at the housing needs and choices both existing and emerging for our aging population, and then develop policy recommendations on how they can better meet these needs in the future.

Documents are accessed from the menu at the top of the home page under the following categories:
1. Project details – background, methodology, budget, team and sponsors of the project.
2. Community profiles – This is an online statistical model that can be used to create a profile of the seniors’ population in any Atlantic Canada community over the next 25 years. Using FSA (Forward Sortation Area = first three digits of a postal code), the model can project how many men and women ages 50 to 85+ will live there. It can also project the health and wealth states of men and women in each age cohort, allowing a better understanding as to what the diverse aging population will likely be able to afford in terms of housing and what level of support they will need. Includes a user guide and samples.
3. Housing locator – a forthcoming part of the project, this will be a searchable on-line inventory of seniors housing options that are currently available in Atlantic Canada.
4. Reports – the reports on the various phases of the project, some are forthcoming as the project is not yet complete.
5. Research initiatives – a description of the various major research initiatives that make up this project:
• a survey of over 1,700 Atlantic Canadian seniors;
• Focus Groups with over 120 seniors from underrepresented groups;
• Case Studies exploring innovative housing options available both in Canada and around the world;
• a feasibility study exploring the possibility of developing an on-line inventory of seniors housing options in Atlantic Canada;
• a thorough review of municipal, provincial and federal government policies which impact seniors housing.
On the left-hand menu is a What’s New section that features free documents in HTML or PDF format. The documents include Focus Group Reports in English and French and ASHRA newsletters, Highlights Reports, Survey Overviews, and Case Studies.
