Spring 2012 - Homelessness Working Group
The NHRC's Homelessness Working Group meeting was held on Tuesday afternoon April 24th, 2012 at the Château Cartier Hotel, 1170 Aylmer Road in Gatineau.
Co-chairs Nancy Baker of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) and Louise Hale-Finley of New Brunswick - Social Development opened the meeting. The first presenter, Nick Falvo of Carleton University, started off by describing Canada's evolving responses to homelessness. This was followed by a presentation on perspectives from New York City's research on Housing First by Professor Deborah K. Padgett from New York University. Then, Professor Tim Aubry from the University of Ottawa provided the early findings emerging from the At Home/Chez Soi study of Housing First approaches in five Canadian cities. Lastly, Nick Falvo of Carleton University examined factors faced by municipalities when trying to implement a Housing First program.
