The NHRC's Sustainable Housing and Communities Working Group meeting was held on Tuesday afternoon November 8th, 2011 at the Albert at Bay Suite Hotel, 435 Albert Street in Ottawa.

The co-chairs, Mark Holzman of CMHC and Waïl Aazari of the Société d'habitation du Québec opened the meeting. The first presenter, Gordon Dewis of Statistics Canada presented the findings of the 2009 Households and the Environment Survey relative to indoor air quality. This was followed by a presentation on the effects of the built-environment on public health issues by Britt Erickson of Public Health Agency of Canada. George McKibbon of McKibbon Wakefield Inc. presented research by the Canadian Institute of Planners' National Healthy Communities Initiative. Afterwards, Bhavna Sivanand from the Region of Peel highlighted research on how Canadian communities are implementing active, healthy design in their built environment. This was followed by a presentation on how the social housing sector is implementing green sustainable practises by Catherine Wood of Green Light on a Better Environment (GLOBE).
