McGill University
Affordable Homes Research Group
The three primary goals are teaching, research, and outreach projects that apply findings to the building industry. It explores new and innovative approaches to North American housing design. The program operates on the principle that today's architect requires a well-developed knowledge of design, and a creative appreciation and understanding of a wide range of economic and social issues, in order to function in, and contribute to, the current housing environment. The Program stimulates the student to reexamine conventional attitudes.
Investigation of the modular housing industry, conversion of industrial buildings to affordable housing, development of guidelines for urban renewal in Canadian municipalities, analysis of self-build housing, planning for suburban evolution, development of affordable and sustainable housing alternatives, panelization of narrow-front housing, exploration of user needs and priorities in affordable housing with the use of state-of-the-art computer software
