Housing and Population Health Working Group
In 2000, the NHRC set up an ad-hoc committee to explore research needs related to housing and population health. The Committee engaged Dr. James Dunn from the University of Calgary’s Department of Community Health Sciences. Dr. Dunn produced a report outlining a conceptual model for research linking housing and health, and proposed that the next step be a needs, gaps and opportunities assessment. The Ad-hoc Committee on Population and Health became a working group of the NHRC pursing the following objectives:
- To establish priorities for housing and population health research issues and undertake activities that address them
- To identify partners in the health research community and the institutions that fund them, and identify and develop opportunities for collaborative research on housing and population health
- To promote and implement the framework through partners and share information of common interest on housing and population health research
The last co-chairs of the Working Group were Tom Henderson New Brunswick Family and Community Services, and Phil Deacon, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. The interests of this Working Group were incorporated into the other Working Groups in the Fall 2007.

This Working Group existed in one form or other since 1987. The "Working Group on Housing for Special Needs" began as a group to discuss research related to the housing needs of the elderly population, but grew to include research on the housing needs of persons with disabilities as well.
- share information of common interest on seniors housing research
- establish priorities for housing research issues and undertake activities that address them
- identify and develop opportunities for collaborative housing research among members
The last Co-chairs of the Working Group were Joan Miller, Manitoba Family Services and Housing, and Luis Rodriguez, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation
