Private Consultants or Firms

In 2007 CMHC commissioned the CMHC Housing Research Mapping Project. It identified, as a conservative estimate, more than 670 established housing researchers—43 percent of whom are private consultants. These individuals and firms generally undertake research on a contract basis. Their work becomes the property of those commissioning the research: some of it is public and some of it not. Certain policy or think tank organizations also secure funding to commission research in order to promote dialogue and evolve public policy. Examples include the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA), and the Wellesley Institute.

The Canadian Housing Research Network (CHRN) contains information about many of these researchers.
